Coca-Cola and Química Verde Install Biofilters to Improve Access to Potable Water in Angola

Luanda, March 22, 2024 – To celebrate World Water Day, Coca-Cola Angola, in collaboration with its bottling partner Refriango and the National Commission of Angola for UNESCO (CNU-Angola), announces a partnership with Química Verde Lab (QVL) to launch the “Minha Água, Minha Vida” initiative. This project aims to install 10 Water Biofilters in the Lifune Ana Passo community, located in the Bengo province, improving the community's access to clean drinking water.

Using the QVL’s "Biofilter" water treatment technology, the project will involve installing filters in a rural medical center, a community school, and family homes. In addition to the installations, basic hygiene and sanitation training will be provided to ensure the proper use and management of the Water Biofilters.

This initiative aligns with The Coca-Cola Company’s 2030 Water Security Strategy, which focuses on accelerating necessary actions to increase water security where the company operates, positively impacting people's lives.

Paula Lima Matoso, Marketing Director at Coca-Cola Angola, mentioned, "Water is a priority for The Coca-Cola Company and is essential for our purpose of refreshing the world and making a difference. We invest in water initiatives that benefit nature and communities, including projects aimed at improving access to clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene, while simultaneously supporting people – especially women and girls.”

“We are therefore delighted to launch this water project on World Water Day, benefiting both the environment and people, adapted to local needs, alongside Refriango, CNU-Angola, and QVL,” she added.

Alexandre Costa, representative of CNU-Angola, stated, “This project is a key step for Angola in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 for 2030, which is to ensure availability of clean water and sanitation for all. These actions will help to improve the living conditions of the rural population and increase the country’s resilience to the challenge of managing water resources, a concern not only for Angola but for the whole world.”

Tânia Jardim, Marketing Administrator at Refriango, declared, “Sustainable access to clean water is a key priority for Refriango. We are working towards regenerative water use – reducing, reusing, recycling, and replenishing water used in producing our beverages. We are proud to contribute to improving access to clean water in key communities, alongside QVL.”

António Quilala, Project Manager at Química Verde Lab (QVL), emphasized the importance of the project, noting, “Many families in rural communities in the Bengo province suffer from diarrheal diseases, primarily due to a lack of clean drinking water and, at times, poor hygiene practices at the household level. This remains a critical barrier to their development. This project aims to mitigate the situation, improving the health and living conditions of families in rural communities.”
